Why An Ebook?

A well-written ebook demonstrates that the company it?s from is run by experts in their field. They know all the nitty-gritty details, so customers can trust that they?re dealing with a reputable, knowledgeable business.

Generally, these ebooks are given away for free. This sparks appreciation from recipients, who may feel compelled to make a purchase in return (due to the rule of reciprocity).

Finally, the content of the ebook usually suggests ways readers can use the company?s products or services. If a soapmaking supplies vendor writes about how to tint soap red with sandalwood powder, it stands to reason they?ll include a link to their powdered sandalwood.

What Should I Write About?

Notice that none of the reasons are ?the companies happen to employ budding authors.? That?s because the point isn?t to write beautifully; it?s to share helpful information you?re an expert on.

So that is exactly what you?ll write about. If you?re a fitness trainer who?s worked with a lot of older clients with back problems, you could write about safe exercises for injured backs or sleeping tips for back relief. You could even include sketched diagrams.

And so on. Determine your expertise, then ask yourself what questions people may have on the topic. Write out your answers in your ebook.

How Do I Create The Ebook?

An ebook can be written in any word processing program (such as Microsoft Word or Open Office) as long as you can export your finished work as a PDF. This preserves your file so recipients can?t edit it.

In any of these programs, you can add pictures throughout to illustrate your points, display charts or graphs or provide points of visual interest.

If you want to incorporate special effects, such as flipping pages or an embedded video, you can choose the right ebook software for your needs from this list.

And How Do I Publish It?

Once it?s a PDF, the easiest way to get your ebook onto the Internet is to host it on your site. Then, share the ebook by sharing the link to where it lives on your site.

If you?re using WordPress, add the ebook as a new piece of media. This works for files up to 10 MB.

If your ebook is larger than 10 MB, the easiest solution is to upload it to Dropbox and share the link provided.

Uzbek dictator's daughter has a role for Depardieu

MOSCOW (AP) ? French actor Gerard Depardieu will reportedly play a part in the film based on a script written by the daughter of Uzbekistan's authoritarian President Islam Karimov.

Gulnara Karimova has frequently been touted as a potential successor to her iron-fisted father who has ruled the ex-Soviet nation for 23 years. Karimova is feted back home as a diplomat, philanthropist, singer and fashion designer, but her critics say she has used her power to forcibly take over businesses across the Central Asian nation.

Uzbek filmmaker Akbar Khakimov told Olam.uz news agency Wednesday that Depardieu will play a Christian monk in the film set in Central Asia around sixth century.

Last year, New York's Fashion Week canceled a show by Karimova under pressure from human rights groups that criticized child labor in the Uzbek cotton industry.

Family of brain-damaged worker takes Foxconn to court in China

HONG KONG (Reuters) - The father of a Foxconn worker left brain-damaged by a factory accident in southern China took the company to court on Tuesday, in a case that heaps more attention on the labor practices of Apple Inc's largest contract manufacturer.

The case involves Zhang Tingzhen, a 26-year-old engineer who had nearly half his brain surgically removed after surviving an electric shock a year ago.

His plight came to light after Reuters reported that Taiwan firm Foxconn sent telephone text messages to his family telling them it would cut off funding for his treatment and other expenses if they did not remove him from hospital in Shenzhen city and submit him for a disability assessment 70 km (43 miles) away in Huizhou, where the company says he was hired.

But his father, Zhang Guangde, is contesting that and says his son was hired in Shenzhen, not Huizhou, where wages and compensation levels are substantially lower than in Shenzhen.

A lawyer representing Zhang's family told Reuters after a three-hour court hearing that they furnished evidence showing that Zhang was hired in Shenzhen.

"Our evidence includes hospital correspondences, notice of hospitalization, factory salary slips, colleague declarations, they all point to the time and place of his injury and his employment being in Shenzhen," said lawyer Zhang Xiaotan.

No comment was immediately available from Foxconn.

Labor activists say Zhang's case highlights a common practice among large companies in China, which sign work contracts with employees in inner Chinese cities, where wages and compensations levels are relatively low, and then deploy them to work in more expensive cities.

Doctors removed half Zhang's brain to keep him alive and he remains in hospital under close observation, unable to speak or walk properly.

His case has raised fresh questions over the labor practices of Foxconn, one of the biggest and most high-profile private employers in China, after a series of suicides among its workforce of about 1 million and recent labor unrest. (Editing by Robert Birsel)

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? It was a VIP audience for what was likely the last performance of the venerable Tehran Symphony Orchestra. Watching from the front row in late August was Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in what was seen as an endorsement from the ruling theocracy, which once tried to stamp out all music as a violation of Islamic values.

Just two months later, the musicians are out of work, funding has run dry and a nearly 80-year-old institution that survived wars, coups and the 1979 Islamic Revolution was declared Tuesday in an apparently irreversible "coma" by media.

The apparent tipping point was financial. It could be counted as collateral damage from Western sanctions that have left Iran's economy so stressed that authorities are considering banning exports of staples such as rice and wheat in order to boost emergency stockpiles.

"We are currently facing a financial drought," Parliament speaker Ali Larijani told a group of officials Monday. "We will have a more difficult year ahead."

The full story of the orchestra's demise likely runs deeper. In a time of escalating showdowns with the West over Iran's suspect nuclear program, the opposition of Iran's clerical leadership toward anything deemed as too Western is gaining strength.

"Musicians have had no support in recent years," said Saba Radman, a music journalist and critic. "They feel very disillusioned."

The Tehran orchestra ? by far the oldest and biggest of several concert hall-style ensembles in Iran ? was often an easy target of hard-liners because of its roots during the era of the Western-backed monarchy toppled by the Islamic Revolution. During its heyday in the 1960s and 70s, it hosted performances by world famous musicians such as violin virtuoso Yehudi Menuhin.

The orchestra fell further from favor during a European tour after the riots triggered by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's disputed re-election in 2009. Opposition supporters in Europe used the concerts as forums to denounce Iran's ruling system and flash the green wrist bands and scarves that symbolized the protest movement.

Meanwhile, Islamic conservatives ? including forces within the powerful Revolutionary Guard ? have reclaimed influence since the widespread crackdowns on reformists and can even exert muscle over Supreme Leader Khamenei. Cultural groups outside direct state control, such as the Tehran orchestra, have often come under suspicion as potential liberal-leaning havens. In January, authorities closed down the House of Cinema, an independent film group that operated for 20 years.

"Many concerts have been canceled by local authorities over the past years, but the Culture Ministry raised no objections," said Radman.

Hamid Shahabadi, the deputy culture minister in charge of artistic affairs, acknowledged some delays in payments for musicians while insisting that the orchestra has not been disbanded, but he indicated that its musicians need to look for work elsewhere.

He suggested some could be absorbed into a planned state-run institution that would oversee all remaining orchestras. Those concentrate heavily on traditional Persian music.

Iran's Islamic authorities tried to ban all music in the early years of the Islamic Revolution, claiming it violated strict Muslim tenets. The clerics eventually relented, but, as recently as 2005, Ahmadinejad tried unsuccessfully to outlaw Western music on state-run television and radio.

At the same time, the Tehran Orchestra performed Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 ? drawing criticism from some conservatives because the piece was associated with liberals and secular groups during the early years of the Islamic Revolution.

A year later, it brought more grimaces from Islamic authorities for its program in Germany that included Tchaikovsky's Overture to "Romeo and Juliet" and Beethoven's Seventh Symphony ? with a snippet of "Dog Breath Variations" by American rock impresario Frank Zappa slipped in.

In late August, the orchestra may have played its last piece ? the Iranian national anthem ? at the opening of the Nonaligned Movement summit, which Iranian officials billed as a world gathering to challenge the economic pressures of the West over Tehran's nuclear program.

Orchestra members told the semiofficial ILNA news agency Monday that they have not rehearsed together or been paid for three months. An experienced musician may receive just 6 million rials, or less than $200 a month at the current exchange rates ? below an average taxi driver's pay ? and must supplement income through other performances or professions.

"Many (Iranian) artists are working as taxi drivers, office secretaries and accountants" rather than focusing on their profession, singer Fazel Jamshidi was quoted by the semiofficial Mehr news agency.

Arsalan Kamkar, a violinist in the orchestra, told The Associated Press on Monday that "only seven or eight members of the orchestra have valid contracts. Unfortunately, the rest have not had contracts over the past months, and it seems unlikely their contracts will be extended."

Kamkar said the shutdown highlights the dislike for Western-oriented culture by Iran's rulers, who are also sitting on one of the world's prized collections of European and American modern art.

In August, the Museum of Contemporary Art displayed about 100 works purchased by the late shah and his family ? including pieces by Andy Warhol, David Hockney and Jasper Johns. But most of the collection ? works by Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Francis Bacon and many others ? remains in vaults and basement storage.

The Communications Network ? Communications and Program ...

At the recent Communications Network Conference, Kevin Corcoran from Lumina Foundation and I set off on a journey to try to bridge the divide between communications and program. Since we are both program officers, we began by asking our audience to rate their relationships with their program colleagues, identify how often they proactively offered input to program staff and share how many of them wished they were brought in earlier on projects. What we found was a group of communication professionals who were really interested in working together with program staff from the beginning of an idea.

Communications staff want to be part of the program team and not be seen as a hindrance or in the way. But how to do that??Become a ?mole? on the program team? Take a program officer to lunch? Join the program team meetings/email groups? All of these ideas were raised in the group. One of the most popular ideas, however, was to have strategy sessions with program staff. Note that says strategy sessions?and not communications sessions. Communications staff have much more to offer beyond being ?pizza delivery people? as one person described it ? the feeling that program staff just place orders for press releases, tri-fold brochures (?what?s with the tri-fold?!?) and expect the communications staff to deliver.

That sounds great but what about when program staff don?t really know what communications staff do? How would you describe your work to a program officer? Maybe take her/ him to lunch, talk about your work and share your ideas about how you might work together. Otherwise we program officers will tend to wait until a crisis or just ask you for the press release or dreaded tri-fold brochure. We need to learn more about you and your work, and we need to build trust with each other.

That trust and ability to work effectively together can best come from many little, informal conversations that can add up to a big thing. Our relationship would not be built on crisis management, or ?pizza delivery?, but rather built on authentic conversations over time. When you establish those relationships and trust it allows the communications staff to have greater empathy for the needs of the program staff. It also allows program staff to empathize with communications when they are told no or not now.

In fact, instead of saying no, trying saying ?you are really passionate about this idea, let?s figure out the best way to channel it.? I love that language because then it does feel like we are in this together and that we have a shared goal. And in the end, isn?t that what we are all here for?our shared interest in the work of our grantees?

Clinton presses Algeria on Mali intervention plan

ALGIERS (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pressed regional power Algeria on Monday to support an Africa-led military intervention in northern Mali, a senior U.S. official said.

Clinton's one-day visit comes amid mounting international pressure on Algeria over the crisis in Mali, where a March military coup was followed by a revolt that has seen Tuareg rebels and Islamist militants, some linked to al Qaeda, seize control of the northern two-thirds of the country.

The senior U.S. official said after the talks that Clinton argued strongly that counter-terror efforts in Mali could not wait for a political resolution to Mali's problems.

"The secretary underscored ... that it is very clear that a political process and our counter-terrorism efforts in Mali need to work in parallel," the official said.

"We have an awful lot at stake here, and an awful lot of common interests, and there's a strong recognition that Algeria has to be a central part of the solution," the senior U.S. official told reporters traveling with Clinton.

"They are going to be supportive of a major effort in Mali to both restore democracy and restore order in the North. Everyone has their favorite institutions to work with, and there's a lot that has to be sorted out in the geometry of the thing," the official said before Clinton's talks with Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

Africa's biggest country, and a top oil and gas exporter, Algeria shares a 2,000-km (1,250-mile) border with Mali and sees itself as the major regional power, wary of any outside interference.

It fears military action in Mali could push al Qaeda militants back into southern Algeria as well as triggering a refugee and political crisis, especially among displaced Malian Tuaregs heading north to join tribes in Algeria.

Algeria repeatedly has advocated a diplomatic solution to the Mali crisis, and ruled out intervention itself.

Although Algiers would not be able to veto an intervention operation by other countries, it would be diplomatically risky for African states backed by Western powers to intervene in Mali without its consent, especially as the conflict could drag on for many months.

"TACIT" AGREEMENT

Clinton's visit to Algiers came after a high-level meeting in the Malian capital Bamako on October 19 that brought regional and international players to the negotiating table, and after which French and Algerian sources said Algeria had "tacitly" agreed to intervention.

France, the region's former colonial power, drafted a U.N. Security Council resolution urging Mali to engage in dialogue with Tuareg Islamist rebels Ansar Dine if they cut links with radical groups, a move that satisfied Algiers' calls for dialogue.

Paris had until now considered Ansar Dine among the al Qaeda-linked groups and refused to negotiate with them.

The resolution also asked African states and the United Nations for a Mali military intervention plan led by the West African ECOWAS block within 45 days.

U.S. officials said Clinton planned to underscore that Algeria would be crucial to any future mission in Mali, noting both its military power and the strength of its intelligence gathering network in the region.

A second official said it appeared Algeria was "beginning to warm to the idea" of an ECOWAS-led military intervention, but this would be contingent on the West African block putting forward a fully-developed plan which it has yet to do.

Last week, my wife began to have severe headaches. Soon, they became unbearable, so I took her to an urgent care center. The doctor there told us she was suffering from sinusitis and an ear infection. He sent her home. When the headaches continued, accompanied with vomiting, we went to our family doctor. He immediately admitted her to the hospital. There, tests showed she was suffering from a bilateral subdural hematoma (bleeding on the brain). We spent the next five days in the Intensive Care Unit, where? doctors drilled a hole into her skull to drain the fluids. She is now at home recovering and getting a little stronger every day.

The day after we got home from the hospital, a large package addressed to my wife was delivered. We opened it to find a shoebox, its lid secured by a massive amount of Scotch tape. The box came from our 6-year-old great-niece, Victoria, who lives in Wilson, N.C.? Taped on top was a note in a young child?s wobbly printing: ?I wont ys syx . . . To AC? which we interpreted as, ?I don?t want you sick . . . to Aunt Cathy.? We haven?t had to decipher a child?s handwriting for a while, but we?re going with this interpretation.

My wife began removing the tape. With some effort, she got the lid off, only to peer into a box that was empty except for one small piece of paper encased in plastic wrap. Opening it up, my wife found a beautiful crayoned picture of a rainbow with a bird colored in blue Magic Marker flying over it. Fluffy white clouds floated above the bird.

We could tell Victoria had colored and cut out the rainbow from a coloring book and pasted it onto a sheet of white copy paper. Next, my wife discovered another piece of paper in the same handwriting as the note on top of the box. This time, our great-niece had written, ?I hopy you gft bebtr.? If my translation is correct, she was saying, ?I hope you get better.? She signed her note, ?love Victoria,? but used a heart for the ?o? in her name.

As we stared at the empty box, Victoria?s mother, Pam, called and told us to expect a package from her little girl. She didn?t know what it contained, she said, because Victoria had taped it shut before asking her mother to send it. ?It feels like an empty box,? she told us. Pam also said her daughter kept insisting if she could only get the box to Aunt Cathy, it would make her feel better.

I don?t how long it takes a 6-year-old to write more than one note, color a rainbow and draw both clouds and a blue bird, but I?m sure it was no easy task. The volume of tape she used to seal the box also showed a great deal of time and care. What my wife opened that day, although it may have seemed like an empty box, held much more. It contained all the love of a 6-year-old child who was worried about her Aunt Cathy. And that box held more than just love. It was crammed with prayers, well-wishes and hopes for a better tomorrow.

Yes, my wife spent five days in intensive care and went through a major surgery. What did we learn? Sometimes, the best medicine doesn?t come from doctors, nurses or pharmacists. It isn?t dispensed in a bottle, an IV bag or a syringe. Sometimes, it comes in an empty box.

I like empty things. Two thousand years ago, two women ran to a tomb where the body of their Friend and Savior lay. They were discussing how they could roll away the massive stone that covered the entry. Upon their arrival, they found it already moved to one side. An angel appeared and told them the Person they were looking for wasn?t there; He had risen. And inside that empty tomb lay not a note, but a pile of used burial clothes.

Through the years, I?ve heard sermon after sermon on the empty tomb. I can agree and disagree with each one. The tomb was empty of Jesus? body. But I believe that empty tomb was also filled with the magnificent love of a Savior who gave His life to show His love and resurrected to give us hope.

The next time you receive a package that seems empty, take the time to look a little more closely. When you see through the eyes of a loving giver, you?ll see the same thing a 6-year-old saw when she sent her great-aunt . . . an empty box.

Rubio leaves Romney bus after daughter?s car accident

LAKEWOOD CREST, Fla.?Florida Sen. Marco Rubio abruptly dropped off Mitt Romney's campaign bus just east of Tampa Saturday evening after word that his 12-year-old daughter had been injured in a car accident in Miami and airlifted to a local hospital.

According to his office, Rubio, who had been campaigning with Romney in Florida today, was alerted about his daughter Amanda's accident just after leaving the stage at Romney's second rally of the day in Kissimmee, according his spokesman Alex Conant.

According to Conant, Amanda Rubio, who is the oldest of the senator's four children, was airlifted to Miami Children's Hospital and is listed in stable condition. He did not provide any further details about the accident.

But Rubio still boarded Romney's bus as it headed toward the third and final event of the day in Land O'Lakes, Fla?and stayed on the bus for more than an hour. Around 6:45pm, Romney's motorcade abruptly pulled off Interstate 4, and Rubio was seen exiting Romney's campaign bus.

A moment later, Rubio hopped over a highway barricade, where a Florida Highway Patrol car waited. After standing outside the car for a few minutes, Rubio jumped into the patrol car, which sped away with its lights flashing. A Rubio spokesman said the senator was en route to Miami.

Asked later why Rubio had remained on the Romney bus instead of heading straight to Miami after the GOP nominee's second event, Romney spokesman Rick Gorka said the senator decided to take a flight that had already been "pre-arranged" from a Tampa airport.

He said the GOP candidate had Rubio's daughters in his prayers, but offered no further comment.

Oakley unveils Airwave ski goggles equipped with Recon's MOD Live heads-up display, iOS app

Remember late last year when Recon Instruments introduced its MOD Live Android-enabled heads-up display for the likes of ski goggles?Joining the ranks of other optics makers, Oakley's partnered with the company to seamlessly integrate the augmented-reality unit into its own goggles, dubbed Airwave. It's not just another shell for the system, either, as Oakley will be providing a companion app that'll work with iOS -- which seems to be first official instance as such since Recon itself said it would be coming earlier this year. The MOD Live itself is otherwise the same right-eye positioned system (providing a perceived 14-inch display at five feet away) we've seen for almost a year now, so don't expect to get the clearest picture if you're left eye dominant or use contact lenses for distance. Furthermore, there's still GPS for tracking friends / navigation, and Bluetooth to work with a water-resistant wrist remote that allows you to control your smartphone and the display itself. Of course, this also means Recon's Android SDK will also be workable, as will your Contour camera.

If you're interested in Oakley's spin on the MOD Live, the Airwave will hit Apple stores on October 31st for $600 in your choice of black with a black Iridium lens, or a white with black graphics and a "fire" colored variant of the lens -- yes, they're interchangeable just like most of Oakley's other specs. Interior e-Design for the Masses | Metropolis POV | Metropolis ...

Newport Beach, California?based interior designer Brooke Shepherdson, founder of Brooke Elizabeth Design, is experimenting with a new form of design delivery aimed at small budget, low-maintenance clients with a service option called ?e-design?. With the economy in a lull and after having her first baby last year, she was looking for new ways to work from home while raising a child, so that she could continue to engage with clients who love her style but either live in New York or simply don?t require a full range of services. She realized there was an untapped market of prospective clients interested in a streamlined design process; an e-design option would be ideal for do-it-yourselfers, someone living in a remote location or anyone on a limited budget who just needs a little design help.

?People love the idea, and it makes a lot of sense in these economic times,? Shepherdson says. ?I?ve found that my clients love to shop on their own, and with so many online retailers, they have the opportunity to find great items themselves, but they?ve all told me, they don?t know how to pull it all together or make the items they love fit well in their own personal space.?

In response, Shepherdson designed a custom solution: For an affordable flat fee (starting at $800), and after the client supplies photos and dimensions of the space, she delivers an inspirational design board displaying images and sketches, a scaled floor plan, furnishings selections, shopping list, and finally a step-by-step guide to assembling the space.

The program has been in place for about a year, appealing mostly to residential clients, but Shepherdson sees it as a good alternative for small businesses as well. ?Small businesses often don?t have a budget for interior design but want a professional and welcoming environment.?E-design is the perfect answer,? she says.

Shepherdson?s e-service program is still in its infancy, so it?s too early to tell if this new business model will be successful. It is, however, a smart solution when facing real life constraints?paperless, affordable, small-scale interior design. Not only does it make an elite service profession more accessible, its use of digital tools makes it, quite possibly, the future of the profession. Now, all you need is an i-phone app that can take reliable dimensions of the space in question, and you?ll be able to redesign a space with just a phone and a bank account! Here are some examples of projects she completed for clients in New York.

US consumer confidence at highest level in 5 years

WASHINGTON (AP) - A survey shows consumer confidence rose this month to the highest level in five years, an encouraging sign for the still-weak economy

The University of Michigan's final index of October consumer sentiment rose to 82.6 from 78.3 in September. That's the highest since September 2007?three months before the Great Recession began.

Falling gas prices and a slightly better job market lifted consumers' outlook. The unemployment rate fell to 7.8 percent last month, the first time since July 2009 than it has been below 8 percent.

The survey followed a government report that said consumer spending helped boost economic growth in the July-September quarter to a 2 percent annual rate. That's up from a 1.3 percent rate in the April-June quarter.

Children and Homecoming - Military Family

The homecoming of a service member is a major change for the children in a household. They have grown physically, emotionally, and socially during the deployment. They are not as skilled at coping with their stress because they have little life experience. As a result, they may become firmly attached to the returning parent wanting their undivided attention or they may seem distant, withdrawn or seem that they just don?t care. There will be a readjustment period (typically four to six weeks) for the entire family. You can greatly enhance your family?s reunion by developing realistic expectations of how your child will respond to the service member?s return based upon the child?s age. Children are developing individuals who change rapidly in their thoughts and behavior. What you can generally expect of different ages, and how you can improve the reunion process with your children is discussed below.

Infants (Birth to 1 year):

As painful as it might be to consider, do not expect an infant to recognize the parent who has returned from a long deployment. Infants have not yet developed a great ability to remember people and events. They may cry, fuss, or pull away when held by the deployed person. Again, go slow. The infant will warm up at his or her own pace.

Toddlers (1 to 3 years):

A typical toddler response would be to hide from the newly returned parent, to cling to his/her primary caregiver, cry, and perhaps regress in potty training. Give your child space and time to warm up to the returning parent. It helps for the deployed parent to sit at eye level with your child and talk with him/her. A gentle offer by the parent to play with the toddler may be helpful, but do not force the issue. Also, the child may have a clearer memory of the deployed parent if the stay behind caregiver frequently showed him/ her pictures of the military member and said ?Daddy? or ?Mommy,? as the case may be. This is helpful because for children at this age, the old adage ?out of sight, out of mind? aptly applies.

Preschoolers (3-5 years):

Children in this age range can tend to think that the world revolves around them. It is not uncommon for your preschooler to think that he or she somehow made their parent go away, or that the parent left because he or she no longer cared about the child. Keeping this in mind, the child may feel abandoned or guilty. They may also express anger and test limits to see if familiar rules still apply. In order to promote the reunion process, it is important for the parent to accept the child?s feelings and focus on rewarding good behavior. Additionally, the returning parent should support the other parent?s rule enforcement but also be careful about stepping into an authoritative role too quickly.

School Age (5-12 years):

In this age range, children are more likely to give returning parents a warm reception, especially if their relationship was strong before the deployment. The child will probably try to monopolize the service member?s attention by showing off accomplishments and hobby items. If their relationship was strained before the deployment, the child may fear that the deployed parent may punish them for misbehavior during deployment. This thought process can lead the child to be shy and withdrawn at first. It is good for the returning parent to be friendly and show interest in what the child has done in their absence, while praising the child for their accomplishments.

Adolescent (13-18 years):

Adolescents can have mood swings? one moment they are solving problems in a reasonable and logical way and the next may be reacting in a purely emotional fashion. So, your adolescent?s reaction to your return may be characterized by mixed emotions. Like the school age child, your adolescent will likely be very excited to see the deployed parent again, if the relationship was good-natured prior to the deployment. Sometimes, however, adolescents are reserved to publicly express their emotions and may be more concerned about acting ?cool? in front of their peers. Adolescents tend to be very sensitive about being unfavorably judged or criticized. With this in mind, be sure to make time to discuss with your adolescent what is going on in his/her life as well as what you?ve experienced. As with sons and daughters of any age, it?s critical to give your adolescent some of each parent?s undivided pleasant attention.

Single Parents

If you are a single parent in the military, there are a few additional issues to consider. If you?re a custodial parent, your children have probably been living with someone else for several months. The bond between this caregiver and your children has strengthened. Your child?s increased bond and loyalty to their caregiver may be painful for you, but go slow. Focus on communicating both with the caregiver and your children, and recognize that you and your children will need to adapt to living with each other again. Your children have been living with someone else who probably had different rules and procedures compared to your own household. Give yourself and your children adequate time to ?shift gears?. The adjustment period can be awkward, but it is helpful to involve the caregiver with the transition.

Since your children have lived with some different family rules and procedures, take time to compare with them the rules of your home. As you?re doing this, seek their input regarding how they would prefer life at home. They should feel included in the process of re-establishing the structure and tone of their home environment.

If you are a non-custodial parent, your children?s living conditions were probably not altered by your deployment. However, your visits with the children have been curtailed. As you re-establish these visits, remember that you and your children have grown and you will need to take time to get reacquainted.
