1 seed Falcons lose to Bucs, don't gain momentum

ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta Falcons are heading to the postseason with some injury concerns.

Josh Freeman threw a touchdown pass to Mike Williams and Doug Martin ran for 142 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown run, in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 22-17 victory over the Falcons, who lost two defensive starters.

The Falcons (13-3) had little to play for as they already have home-field advantage through the NFC playoffs. Coach Mike Smith said he wanted to "finish the regular season the right way," and he stayed with his starters through the game.

But, defensive end John Abraham, Atlanta's best pass rusher, left with an apparent left ankle injury in the fourth quarter. Abraham couldn't put his weight on the ankle as he was helped off the field. Starting cornerback Dunta Robinson suffered a head injury in the first quarter and did not return. His helmet hit Martin on the running back's 3-yard gain. Robinson walked off the field and was escorted to the locker room.

Asked if he considered removing his starters after Abraham's injury, Smith said "absolutely not. We were going to continue to play to win this ballgame."

Smith said he does not believe the injuries to Abraham and Robinson are serious.

The Buccaneers (7-9) snapped a five-game skid for a positive end to a disappointing season. Tampa Bay was 6-4 and in playoff contention before a 24-23 home loss to the Falcons on Nov. 25 started the skid.

Matt Ryan's only touchdown pass was his 7-yard throw to Harry Douglas on a fourth-down play with about 7 minutes remaining to cut Tampa Bay's lead to five points. Atlanta's defense held, and the Falcons took possession at their 19 with 3:44 remaining.

The Falcons gained one first down before Ryan's fourth-down pass for Tony Gonzalez fell incomplete with about 2 minutes remaining.

Ryan completed 28 of 44 passes for 238 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. Ryan had difficulty finding open receivers against Tampa Bay's defense, which ranks last in the league against the pass.

Martin capped his strong rookie season with 28 carries for 142 yards. Freeman completed 19 of 35 passes for 222 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Freeman returned to his early season form after throwing four interceptions in each of the last two losses.

The Buccaneers led 16-3 when Asante Samuel intercepted a pass from Freeman late in the third quarter. Samuel's 11-yard return to the Buccaneers 21 set up Michael Turner's 17-yard scoring run for Atlanta's first touchdown.

Tampa Bay answered quickly with an 80-yard touchdown drive capped by Martin's 40-yard run. Martin made a spin move to break a tackle attempt by Falcons safety Thomas DeCoud.

It was difficult for the Falcons to carry through with Smith's stated plan to treat this like any other game. With nothing on the line, there were empty seats in the Georgia Dome and little atmosphere to greet the players out of the tunnel.

The Falcons announced 69,644 tickets were distributed. Many were left unused.

The Falcons' only first-half points came on their second possession. Ryan led the team on a nine-play drive that stalled at the Buccaneers' 10, setting up Matt Bryant's 28-yard field goal.

Man fires some 50 shots in California mall parking lot

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) ? A man was arrested Saturday after firing about 50 shots in the parking lot of a Southern California shopping mall, prompting a lockdown of stores crowded with holiday shoppers.

Marcos Gurrola, 42, of Garden Grove was taken into custody by bicycle police officers patrolling around the open-air Fashion Island mall around 4:30 p.m., police spokeswoman Cathy Lowe said. She said he fired into the air and onto the ground in the parking lot near a Macy's department store.

No one was injured, but the gunfire caused panic, coming a day after a gunman killed 26 children and adults at a Connecticut elementary school, and days after a deadly mall shooting in Oregon.

The mall was crowded with holiday shoppers and the parking lot was full. Witnesses said they ran, screaming and ducking for cover.

"It's a miracle nobody got injured," said Sven Maric, who said he was celebrating his wife's birthday at a restaurant patio about 50 yards away. "The bullets had to land somewhere, and he shot so many."

Lowe says some stores voluntarily closed their doors and kept shoppers inside while police investigated.

Bret McGaughey, 22, of Laguna Beach, said he was with his mom in the Apple store when shoppers ran to the rear of the store as employees locked the front entrance. He estimated that up to 100 people stayed in the back of the store for about 30 minutes until Apple employees announced that police said it was safe to reopen the doors.

Gurrola was arrested for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon, Lowe said.

There was no telephone listing for Gurrola.

On Tuesday, a gunman at an Oregon shopping mall killed two people and wounded a third amid a holiday crowd estimated at 10,000 people.

Clackamas County authorities are still trying to determine why the gunman opened fire before killing himself.

The suburban Portland mall was closed for two days before reopening on Friday.

Spending on salaries rises in ailing Swaziland

MBABANE, Swaziland (AP) ? Government officials in Swaziland say salary spending by the government will rise to $528 million, despite the country's weakened economy.

Finance Minister Majozi Sithole said Monday that would be roughly a $23 million increase year-over-year.

The majority of Swaziland's revenues come from customs fees, something economists warn remains an unstable funding source for the tiny nation.

Swaziland, a kingdom enveloped by South Africa, has been struggling with economic problems for more than a year.

Those economic problems have fueled calls for government reform in the southern African country, sub-Saharan Africa's last absolute monarchy. But the government's brutal response to protests, and reluctance among some tradition-minded Swazis to challenge King Mswati III, have smothered a larger pro-democracy movement

Greece, markets satisfied by EU-IMF Greek debt deal

By Jan Strupczewski
and Luke Baker
Posted 2012/11/27 at 12:18 pm EST

BRUSSELS, Nov. 27, 2012 (Reuters) ? The Greek government and financial markets were cheered on Tuesday by an agreement between euro zone finance ministers and the International Monetary Fund to reduce Greece's debt, paving the way for the release of urgently needed aid loans.

A Greek flag flutters in front of the moon in Athens November 26, 2012. REUTERS/Yorgos Karahalis

The deal, clinched at the third attempt after weeks of wrangling, removes the biggest risk of a sovereign default in the euro zone for now, ensuring the near-bankrupt country will stay afloat at least until after a 2013 German general election.

"Tomorrow, a new day starts for all Greeks," Prime Minister Antonis Samaras told reporters at 3 a.m. in Athens after staying up to follow the tense Brussels negotiations.

After 12 hours of talks, international lenders agreed on a package of measures to reduce Greek debt by more than 40 billion euros, projected to cut it to 124 percent of gross domestic product by 2020.

In an additional new promise, ministers committed to taking further steps to lower Greece's debt to "significantly below 110 percent" in 2022.

That was a veiled acknowledgement that some write-off of loans may be necessary in 2016, the point when Greece is forecast to reach a primary budget surplus, although Germany and its northern allies continue to reject such a step publicly.

Analyst Alex White of JP Morgan called it "another moment of ?creative ambiguity' to match the June (EU) Summit deal on legacy bank assets; i.e. a statement from which all sides can take a degree of comfort".

The euro strengthened, European shares climbed to near a three-week high and safe haven German bonds fell on Tuesday, after the agreement to reduce Greek debt and release loans to keep the economy afloat.

"The political will to reward the Greek austerity and reform measures has already been there for a while. Now, this political will has finally been supplemented by financial support," economist Carsten Brzeski of ING said.

PARLIAMENTARY APPROVAL

To reduce the debt pile, ministers agreed to cut the interest rate on official loans, extend the maturity of Greece's loans from the EFSF bailout fund by 15 years to 30 years, and grant a 10-year interest repayment deferral on those loans.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said Athens had to come close to achieving a primary surplus, where state income covers its expenditure, excluding the huge debt repayments.

"When Greece has achieved, or is about to achieve, a primary surplus and fulfilled all of its conditions, we will, if need be, consider further measures for the reduction of the total debt," Schaeuble said.

Eurogroup Chairman Jean-Claude Juncker said ministers would formally approve the release of a major aid installment needed to recapitalize Greece's teetering banks and enable the government to pay wages, pensions and suppliers on December 13 - after those national parliaments that need to approve the package do so.

The German and Dutch lower houses of parliament and the Grand Committee of the Finnish parliament have to endorse the deal. Losing no time, Schaeuble said he had asked German lawmakers to vote on the package this week.

Greece will receive 43.7 billion euros in four installments once it fulfils all conditions. The 34.4 billion euro December payment will comprise 23.8 billion for banks and 10.6 billion in budget assistance.

The IMF's share, less than a third of the total, will be paid out only once a buy-back of Greek debt has occurred in the coming weeks, but IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said the Fund had no intention of pulling out of the program.

Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann welcomed the deal but said Greece still had a long way to go to get its finances and economy into shape. Vice Chancellor Michael Spindelegger told reporters the important thing had been keeping the IMF on board.

"It had threatened to go in a direction that the IMF would exit Greek financing. This was averted and this is decisive for us Europeans," he said.

The debt buy-back was the part of the package on which the least detail was disclosed, to try to avoid giving hedge funds an opportunity to push up prices. Officials have previously talked of a 10 billion euro program to buy debt back from private investors at about 35 cents in the euro.

The ministers promised to hand back 11 billion euros in profits accruing to their national central banks from European Central Bank purchases of discounted Greek government bonds in the secondary market.

BETTER FUTURE

The deal substantially reduces the risk of a Greek exit from the single currency area, unless political turmoil were to bring down Samaras's pro-bailout coalition and pass power to radical leftists or rightists.

The biggest opposition party, the hard left SYRIZA, which now leads Samaras's center-right New Democracy in opinion polls, dismissed the deal and said it fell short of what was needed to make Greece's debt affordable.

Greece, where the euro zone's debt crisis erupted in late 2009, is proportionately the currency area's most heavily indebted country, despite a big cut this year in the value of privately-held debt. Its economy has shrunk by nearly 25 percent in five years.

Negotiations had been stalled over how Greece's debt, forecast to peak at 190-200 percent of GDP in the coming two years, could be cut to a more bearable 120 percent by 2020.

The agreed figure fell slightly short of that goal, and the IMF insisted that euro zone ministers should make a firm commitment to further steps to reduce the debt if Athens faithfully implements its budget and reform program.

The main question remains whether Greek debt can become affordable without euro zone governments having to write off some of the loans they have made to Athens.

Germany and its northern European allies have hitherto rejected any idea of forgiving official loans to Athens, but European Union officials believe that line may soften after next September's German general election.

Schaeuble told reporters that it was legally impossible for Germany and other countries to forgive debt while simultaneously giving new loan guarantees. That did not explicitly preclude debt relief at a later stage, once Greece completes its adjustment program and no longer needs new loans.

But senior conservative German lawmaker Gerda Hasselfeldt said there was no legal possibility for a debt "haircut" for Greece in the future either.

At Germany's insistence, earmarked revenue and aid payments will go into a strengthened "segregated account" to ensure that Greece services its debts.

A source familiar with IMF thinking said a loan write-off once Greece has fulfilled its program would be the simplest way to make its debt viable, but other methods such as forgoing interest payments, or lending at below market rates and extending maturities could all help.

German central bank governor Jens Weidmann has suggested that Greece could "earn" a reduction in debt it owes to euro zone governments in a few years if it diligently implements all the agreed reforms. The European Commission backs that view.

The ministers agreed to reduce interest on already extended bilateral loans in stages from the current 150 basis points above financing costs to 50 bps.

Defining the art of putting

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) ? Webb Simpson and Keegan Bradley, two of the major faces in the debate over belly putters, said Tuesday they would not fight a change in the rules if golf's governing bodies decide to outlaw putters anchored to the body.

That doesn't mean they're in favor of a ban.

"I'm obviously not happy with the ruling, but I respect the USGA, and especially Mike Davis," Bradley said. "They make the rules, and I'll adjust appropriately. But I'm going to accept the challenge and hopefully do well when they do ban it."

Davis, the USGA executive director, and Royal & Ancient chief executive Peter Dawson have scheduled a press conference Wednesday morning to announce their conclusions on the future of long putters. All indications point toward a ban on anchoring the club.

At issue is not the putter itself, but whether it can be anchored to the body, such as the stomach (belly putters) or the chest (long putters).

The long putters have been in vogue for the better part of 25 years, though a recent surge in use got the attention of golf's two governing bodies. Bradley became the first major champion with a belly putter when he won the PGA Championship last year. Simpson won the U.S. Open using a belly putter, and Ernie Els won the British Open with a belly putter, rallying to beat Adam Scott, who uses a long putter he anchors to the top of his chest.

Guan Tianling, the 14-year-old from China, used a belly putter to win the Asia-Pacific Amateur earlier this month to earn a spot in the Masters.

Dawson spoke in July about looking at the anchored putters as a rules issue instead of an equipment issue. If that's the case and it is banned, it would not take effect until 2016 because the Rules of Golf are only updated every four years.

While a change would affect players like the recent major champions, Carl Pettersson and Tim Clark, several others are opposed to putters stuck into the body. They argue it takes away nervous hands and allows for a smoother stroke.

Tiger Woods is opposed to long putters, and he stated his argument clearly on Tuesday.

"I just believe that the art of putting is swinging the club and controlling nerves, and having it as a fixed point ? as I was saying all year ? is something that's not in the traditions of the game," Woods said. "We swing all other 13 clubs. I think the putter should be the same. It should be a swinging motion throughout the entire bag."

Woods said his biggest concern was not so much the major champions, but junior players.

"There have been some guys who had had success out there, and obviously everyone always copies what we out here, and that's something that I think for the greater good of the game needs to be adjusted," he said.

Simpson first switched to a belly putter in 2004 to help with consistency. He found one in a pro shop, gave it a try and noticed immediate improvement. But for all the attention on belly putters, he said it was the accuracy with his driver that helped him win the U.S. Open at Olympic Club this year.

"My argument the whole time is to change something that drastic, it needs to be based off facts and not what certain people think the tradition of the game looks like," Simpson said. "But look, I'm not going to be one of those guys that says this is a terrible decision. I'm just saying to make a change this big, show me the facts. And hey, they're the governing body, so we'll see what happens."

Simpson already has been practicing with a conventional putter, preparing for such a ban. He said if there is a ban, he would use the conventional putter at home, and then in pro-am rounds and make the switch when he's comfortable with it.

"I'm just going to take it one step at a time until my comfort level gets better and better," Simpson said. "If I feel ready by Hyundai (the start of the 2013 season), I'll be putting with a short putter. And if I don't feel ready for two years, I'll wait."

Bradley said he would be in no rush to make the change if there is a ban.

Graeme McDowell and Ian Poulter were among those who lined up against anchored putters earlier this month in Australia. McDowell said the rule should have been changed years ago, and that using an anchored putter "takes one extraneous movement out of the putting stroke," which he feels is an advantage under pressure.

Poulter, as usual, was more blunt.

"Ban it. End of story," Poulter said.

Steve Stricker, regarded as one of the best putters in golf, has picked up a belly putter to see what the rage was all about. And it concerned him.

"It was pretty scary how fast I picked it up, to tell you the truth," Stricker said. "I went and anchored it just right below my sternum. It was a little different feel for me, but I got pretty consistent pretty quick with it. So I can see that there was an advantage, even though I can't see myself ever doing it."

photo fun face: DEFINITION: Aerobic exercise (cardio), can be ...

DEFINITION: Aerobic exercise (cardio), can be defined as dynamic muscle work with an intensity and duration that achieves significant impacts dermika on respiratory and cardiovascular function (Zacho, 2008).
Physiological effect dermika of the physiological effects of aerobic exercise, is an improved conditioning (expressed as maximal oxygen uptake or maximal oxygen uptake), as a result of circulatory improvements, including an increase in cardiac output and an improved metabolic fitness, including optimization of the muscular metabolism, changes in muscle fiber composition and an increased kapilarisering (Zacho, 2008).
One should do his own thinking about what kind of aerobic exercise that is most appropriate for your individual needs and fitness. Older and / or overweight people often have good benefits and efficacy dermika of workout. Swimming, for example. be a more appropriate form of exercise one race, if you have knee pain. Aerobics may in some cases be more appropriate than regular races as race has a uniform load of the body joint structures, whereas Aerobics generally more versatile movement patterns and more evenly dermika distributes the load of the body joint structures. dermika
INTENSITY required a certain intensity in training sessions to improve fitness; respectively an intensity that is either dermika continuous over 50% of VO2max corresponding to 12-14 on the Borg scale, or an intensity dermika that changes dermika in the intervals between low (30% of VO2max) and high (80% of VO2max) intensities (Sunhedsstyrelsen, 2011). dermika
FREQUENCY AND DURATION Aerobic exercise should, according to health control statement, as a minimum, take place 2-3 times a week, and general physical activities such as walking, climbing stairs, cycling etc.. should be maintained in the remaining days of the week (Health Protection Agency, dermika 2011). If exercise intensity is lower than 50% of VO2max, it may be necessary to have a training frequency of 5 or more times a week to see significant improvements (Zacho, 2008).
According to the theory dermika of periodization and super compensation, do not go more than 7 days before the next training session begins to see continued improvements, and is at its best should be 36-72 hours between each workout, depending on the individual's training mode (Bompa & Haff, 2009).
By training with high intensities, the duration of training may not exceed 45 minutes, since the concentration dermika of the body's stress hormones, including cortisol exceeds an inappropriate level, which can interfere with subsequent refund (Zacho, 2008).
MEASURING INSTRUMENTS Despite the fact that a meta-analysis points to Borgskalaens validity is not as high as other methods (Chen et al, 2002), it is advantageous to choose to use this method as an indication of intensity, as it is still considered as valid and reliabel (Borg, dermika 1998), and since it is an easy and pedagogically appropriate manner, there is provided a measurement of one's maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max).

Each guest drinking beer with likely consume one 12oz bottle per hour for the duration of the party. Try buying a mix of domestic brews and local micro brews. Each guest drinking wine will consume one 5 oz glass of wine per hour for the duration of the party. There are approximately five glasses of wine per bottle.

Have fun with your home bar. Cocktails are meant for celebrations to create good memories with your friends and family.Know you guests and ensure your bar is stocked with what they like to drink. Make them special and taken care of.

Buy enough ice, Have you ever tried to drink a cocktail and it's only got two half melted ice floating on the top and is?barely?cold. It tends to ruin a great thing. You should have 2.5 pounds of ice for every person at your party. If you plan to have an ice bucket or nice stainless buckets filled for your white wines and beers to keep chilled buy enough extra ice to fill those as well. Remember your ice bucket and displays will sit out and melt don't forget to account for that.

Try this drink recipe for a signature cocktail for the night:

Orange - Cranberry Gin & Tonic

5oz ice

1oz Gin

1.5oz OJ
3.5oz Tonic
Garnish with a few frozen cranberries and a twist of orange rind.

Creativity and Affect

The authors of this volume attempt to cohere the field of creativity and affect in a scholarly fashion by categorizing and characterizing some of its major features, including environmental influences; underlying processes; specific affective states; the role of atypical or pathological personalities; unconscious processes; physiological components; proactive and reactive stimuli; intrinsic motivation; eminence versus everyday creativity; and testing of assessing the affective component of creativity. The authors also examine and discuss the role that emotions, feelings and moods play in the creative process. This volume also provides a vehicle for students and psychotherapists, with which they can fully appreciate the feelings generated by the creative process and the various stages of it. How does a creator feel during its more mundane phases? Can he or she tolerate the frustration of failing and being unsuccessful most of the time? What is the real joy of achievement, success, and ultimate acceptance by ones peers in a given field? Do we have to exhibit major psychopathological features in order to achieve eminence in specific fields? What is the role of mind altering substances, mood disorders, and the like? This volume answers these questions and more. Author: Shaw, Melvin P./ Runco, Mark A./ Shaw, Melvin P. Deutsche Telekom sees huge synergies from MetroPCS deal: paper

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Germany's Deutsche Telekom AG expects the merger of its T-Mobile USA with MetroPCS Communications Inc will reap "several billions of euros" in synergies, Telekom chairman Ulrich Lehner told a German weekly magazine.

"The position of Deutsche Telekom in the USA will improve markedly as a result," WirtschaftsWoche quoted Lehner as saying in a report to be published on Monday.

T-Mobile USA and MetroPCS said last month that they wanted to merge their companies, creating a stronger number four on the U.S. wireless market.

T-Mobile is seeking to catch up with market leaders Verizon Wireless and AT&T , and third-place Sprint as the market moves quickly to super-fast mobile Internet offerings.

MetroPCS Communications said on November 19 the U.S. Department of Justice has requested for additional information regarding the proposed merger but continued to expect the deal to close in the first half of 2013.

The blacklist compiled by the Federal Surveillance Service for Mass Media and Communications (Roskomnadzor) is secret, but authorities insist its purpose is to eliminate extreme forms of "offensive" content, such as child pornography, or advocacy of racism, terrorism, drug use and other anti-social behaviors.

The list is constantly changing and expanding (Russian bloggers have posted an alleged copy of it here) and citizens can suggest new entries by logging into an official Roskomnadzor website.

But in its first two weeks of application, the law has produced a few high-profile casualties that critics say point to the fundamental weaknesses of a system that allows authorities to summarily shut down content without any need for a court order or reference to any supervisory body.?

The definitions of "offensive content" are also murky, critics say, and could easily include political conversation that looks "extremist" to a policeman's eyes and other forms of commentary that might be simply misunderstood.

That criticism seems to have already been borne out. This week alone Roskomnadzor has closed down, among others,?a Wikipedia-like encyclopedia of satire, which contained an article about how to make hemp (often associated with marijuana) soup; an online library, which included a copy of "The Anarchist's Cookbook," a 1970's American-authored manual for radicals; and a popular torrent-tracking website, on which users had apparently exchanged a file called "The Encyclopedia of Suicide."

The agency allowed those websites to reopen after the "offensive content" was pruned. But experts say those examples were hugely popular websites whose closure attracted immediate public attention and a storm of complaints; restoring service may not prove so easy for smaller victims of the law.

"The first several days of operation of this law have confirmed our worst fears," says Oleg Kozyrev, a media analyst and popular blogger. ???

"Roskomnadzor can shut down a site within 24 hours, without appealing to a court. But in order to restore a resource, one has to complain and go to court. Even so, the rules for getting back online are not at all clear ... ?As a result, big resources like YouTube, or internet encyclopedias, or social networks are all under threat. They have millions of users, and some of them are inevitably going to post something deemed offensive. That could lead to the closure of the whole portal," which will be disruptive even if it's temporary, he says.

What if JFK had survived his assassination?

On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was killed in Dallas. Almost as prevalent as theories about his assassination are theories about what would have happened to three major historical events if JFK had been alive in 1964.

kennedy in white house

President Kennedy with Dean Rusk and Robert McNamara

It was 49 years ago today that Kennedy was killed on Dealey Plaza. His accused assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, died at the hands of Jack Ruby several days later.

Since then, many theories have sprung up about the assassination, who was involved and why Kennedy was killed.

Among historians and some authors, there has been detailed debate and discussion about what would have happened in the event that Kennedy wasn?t killed in November 1963.

The three main topics of debate have been the outcome of the 1964 presidential election; the escalation of the Vietnam War; and the finality of the historic Civil Rights and Voting Rights acts.

All three of those items were in process when Kennedy died when he visited Texas as part of the run-up to the 1964 presidential campaign.

Kennedy was committed to running again in 1964 and based on the theories among historians, he had a good chance of winning.

His popularity rating was at 58 percent right before the assassination, just after he served 1,000 days in office. That number was higher than similar ratings for Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama, five presidents who won re-election bids.

The presumptive presidential nominee for the Republicans in late 1963 was Senator Barry Goldwater. He was friends with Kennedy and briefly dropped out of race after Kennedy?s death, only to re-enter it to oppose a man he disliked, Lyndon Johnson.

Kennedy and Goldwater had reportedly agreed to debate, while Johnson had no interest in debating Goldwater.

The closeness of an election between Kennedy and Goldwater would have been decided by two big issues looming over the year of 1964: civil rights and Vietnam.

On taped recordings made in the White House just before his death, Kennedy told advisers he expected a tough re-election campaign because of his support of civil rights.

President Kennedy had introduced his historic Civil Rights Act in June 1963 and it was stalled in Congress when Kennedy died.

The Civil Rights Act faced fierce opposition in Congress, mostly from southern Democrats. Kennedy rejected an attempt to substitute a bill that would allow segregation at public facilities to continue.

After his death, President Johnson told the nation that passing the Civil Rights Act would be the best way to honor Kennedy?s legacy, but it took until July 1964 for Johnson and his allies to get the act approved.

If Kennedy had lived, the debate over the Civil Rights Act would have occurred during an election year?or maybe not.

One theory is that Kennedy would have waited until after the 1964 election, with the hope of having more leverage in Congress to pass the act. The combination of Kennedy and Johnson would have tackled the bill, which would have been a protracted battle.

In reality, President Johnson was able to get the Civil Rights Act passed in 1964 and Voting Rights Act passed in 1965 using his mandate from a landslide election, Kennedy?s legacy and his considerable powers of persuasion in Congress.

The same audio tapes from November 19,? 1963 also show Kennedy?s concerns about the crisis in Vietnam as he quizzes two aides who had returned from Asia.

?On the one hand, you get the military saying the war is going better, and on the other hand, you get the political [opinion] with its deterioration . . . I?d like to have an explanation what the reason is for the difference,? Kennedy asked.

The president?s brother, Robert Kennedy, did an audio interview for the Kennedy Library in April 1964 that recounted the thinking about Vietnam at the time of the president?s death: that Vietnam couldn?t fall to the Communists.

?He had a strong, overwhelming reason for being in Vietnam and that we should win the war in Vietnam,? Robert Kennedy said about his brother. The reason was the Domino theory, ?Just the loss of all of Southeast Asia if you lost Vietnam. I think everybody was quite clear that the rest of Southeast Asia would fall,? Kennedy said.

Just three weeks before President Kennedy?s death, South Vietnamese president South Vietnamese Ngo Dinh Diem was killed in a military coup indirectly supported by the United States.

In August 1963, Kennedy said in another taped conversation that Congress would be mad if it found out about a proposed coup in Vietnam, but Congress would ?be madder if Vietnam goes down the drain.?

The situation rapidly deteriorated in Vietnam in the year after Kennedy?s death and in August 1964, Congress approved by a near unanimous vote the Gulf Of Tonkin Resolution, which gave President Johnson the ability to commit massive amounts of U.S. troops without a war declaration.

In 2009, filmmaker and visiting Brown scholar Koji Masutani took on the subject of Kennedy and Vietnam in Virtual JFK: Vietnam If Kennedy Had Live. The film was based on a book and considerable research on the subject by academics at Brown and the University of Toronto, who looked at large amounts of data and transcripts from the Kennedy administration.

Masutani and the researchers concluded that Kennedy would have sought a more diplomatic solution than Johnson, who committed more troops to the Vietnam War in 1964, and that Kennedy wanted to be out of Vietnam entirely by 1966.

Their theory was that Kennedy had a pattern of behavior, established in his handling of crises like the Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile situations, which usually had the president going against the advice of his military advisers to find a diplomatic solution.

Planning documents from November 20, 1963 show that the U.S. had hoped to have all military personnel out of Vietnam by the end of the 1965 calendar year, unless there were ?justified? exceptions.

But the fallout from the Diem coup was unknown at the time of the Kennedy assassination, so how the president would have handled Vietnam during an election year remains a mystery.

Brooklyn mansion on the market for $25 million

20 hrs.

This landmarked, century-old neoclassical mansion in Brooklyn?s Park Slope neighborhood has 23 rooms, 9 bathrooms and approximately 10,000 square feet of space. The home recently listed with Halsted Property for a potentially record-setting $25 million.?

As a point of reference, the priciest home to ever sell in Brooklyn?sold?earlier this year for less than half that amount, $12 million. That was the Brooklyn Heights townhouse once belonging to Truman Capote, which went through numerous?price cuts?over nearly two years from the original $18 million asking price.

?The price is based on offers received by unsolicited offers in the past,? said the property?s broker, Marc Wisotsky. ?We?ve listed at the price [the owner] asked and the market will speak."

The property?s other broker, Jackie Lew, added, ?That is just the asking price. There is negotiability.?

In terms of impressive factors that might contribute to that value, consider this: in 100 years, the house has had just three owners, beginning as the residence of the Tracy family, who made their fortune in stevedoring. Ownership then transferred to the Knights of Columbus. Current owner Anil Kumar Sinha bought it in 1969 and converted it to a private Montessori school, which closed earlier this year amid?scandal.?

Another rare attribute: it?s never been subdivided into apartments. Other than the addition of an enclosed fire escape, the layout is still the same as when the Tracys dwelled there in the twentieth century.?

Other unusual factors for a Brooklyn residence are both the building?s 50-foot width and the 112-foot depth of the property it sits on, both which exceed typical proportions of the area, according to the brokers. The mansion also comes with air rights, for a total (pending approval of any new additions) potential square footage of 16,800.?

The Tracy mansion was built in 1912 by Frank J. Helmle (an alumnus of the iconic New York architecture firm McKim, Mead and White), who also?designed?the Boathouse and other structures in nearby Prospect Park.???

Behind the fa?ade?s four fluted, modified Corinthian columns is this grand entryway. The dramatic marble entrance to the home has a curved bay shape, bronze doors, a golden-hued stained glass transom window, and a vaulted ceiling.

The home has three full floors and a basement (or garden level, as they?re called in Brooklyn). On the parlor level (first floor) are mahogany-paneled walls and this eight-foot tall Italian marble fireplace, and a sweeping staircase with tall stained glass windows.

The mansion?s dining room has coffered ceilings, more dark wood paneling, inlaid floors, and built-in mirrored china cabinets. The brokers note that the Tracy mansion can be a single-family home or can be adapted again to use as a school, or a museum or offices, possibly as a rental property.

The listing is held with?Halstead, an affiliate of?Luxury Portfolio International.

Green Blog: Droopy Flowers and Their Wiles

Some flowers ply the art of seduction, dressing in showy colors, flouncing their petal skirts and grinning up at the sun, seemingly enthralled by their own attractiveness. But what about the ones that droop? Can they attract enough pollinators to thrive in a garden filled with extroverts?

A study published in the British journal Functional Ecology shows that rather than being at a disadvantage, such flowers are masterminds at managing pollinators to their benefit. And that?s where the hummingbird comes in.

The gleaming creature with a long sickle-like beak is often associated with bright tubular flowers. But Nir Sapir, an avian ecologist who works with the Max Planck Institute of Ornithology and a co-author of the paper, said that ornithologists have long been aware that hummingbirds feed from flowers that of varying shapes and colors, often those that are oriented downward. Dr. Sapir and his co-author and postdoctoral adviser, Robert Dudley, who specializes in animals? flight mechanics, set out to examine the relationship between the hummingbird and the drooping bloom.

For their muse, they chose the Anna?s hummingbird, a species with iridescent olive-green feathers (and, in the male?s case, a magenta ruff) that is common on the campus of University of California, Berkeley, where their research took place. After catching the birds, Dr. Dudley and Dr. Sapir placed them in an airy Plexiglas cube that was large enough to allow flight and contained artificial flowers into which nectar-filled syringes had been inserted. The flowers were oriented to point either horizontally, at a 45 degree downward angle or directly facing the floor.

Some of the flowers had a mesh-like mask that measured the bird?s uptake of oxygen as it closed in on a bloom. The researchers anticipated that this would demonstrate that hummingbirds breathe more slowly and use up less energy when supping nectar from lower-hanging flowers, which could explain the attraction to blooms oriented this way.

Instead, they discovered the opposite. Energy-wise, ?it doesn?t pay off for the hummingbirds to feed from these flowers,? Dr. Sapir said. Using the oxygen measures and a high-speed camera to record in-flight motion, the researchers noticed that the drooping flowers required the birds to feed by pulling their bodies upright and jerking back their heads, which requires more energy than feeding from flowers that don?t droop.

Why, then, do the birds bother visiting the flowers at all? ?I think the answer is a bit complicated and largely unknown,? Dr. Sapir said ? but he offers a possible explanation.

A flower that droops shields its nectar under its petals, thereby protecting it from the diluting effects of rain. A visiting bird can then reap the unadulterated liquid, which could explain the extra effort it expends. Besides, given that few other birds can feed at such odd angles, the hummingbird customarily gets first dibs on the prize.

By hanging, the flower caters to the hummingbird?s unusual skills ? something the plant may have evolved to do because of the bird?s reliable pollinating habits. ?I think that the hummingbird may be an efficient pollinator because it has a good memory,? Dr. Sapir said. The birds remember what flowers they have frequented and move along to others accordingly. That way, they spread flower pollen more widely than they would if they didn?t have an internal memory map.

Nectar also happens to be an energy-intensive commodity to produce, Dr. Sapir said. Hence a flower does not benefit if every pollinator in the neighborhood stops by to swig its nectar.

Essentially, the flower ?creates ways to select or control the identities of its pollinators,? he said. The hummingbird?s niche is being strong and capable enough to feed at difficult angles, and the bloom benefits because the bird casts pollen so widely.

Things to Look For When Taking Out a Short-term Loan | Loans

If you?ve ever been strapped for cash well before payday, you?ve probably been tempted by those ads offering quick, convenient, no-collateral payday loans. Payday loans can be immensely helpful if you?re short on funds and you?ve still got days or weeks to go before payday. On the downside, however, payday loans are not all created equal.

Depending on the lender, some payday loans impose penalties for early repayment, or may even place restrictions on how quickly you can access the money. As with any type of loan, it?s crucial to read all the fine print before you sign anything, but sometimes the fine print may include clauses that are virtually incomprehensible to the average borrower.

If you?re considering taking out a short-term payday loan, here are some pointers you should first consider:

Repayment Penalties

Many payday loan companies impose stiff penalties on early repayment. Although this behavior may seem at variance with common sense ? after all, don?t they want the loan paid back promptly? ? it actually does make sense when you consider how much interest money they?re liable to lose in an early repayment.

When you?re taking out a short-term loan, make sure you choose a lender that doesn?t impose an early-repayment penalty. If you?re able to pay your loan early, you?ll manage to save quite a bit on interest ? and a reputable lender will appreciate your quick repayment.

Cost of Loan

Although you know the exact amount you?re asking for, your loan is going to cost more because of interest fees and administration and transaction charges. Some disreputable lenders take advantage of the situation by charging extremely high interest rates and exorbitant administration fees ? all charges that you may not be aware of when you sign your loan agreement.

A reputable lender, however, will be completely up-front about all charges and fees that apply to your loan, so that you?ll know exactly how much it?s going to cost before you sign the agreement. That?s why it?s important to choose a lender that offers complete transparency about the total cost of your loan. They?ll go over the entire APR ? which, with a good lender, will be comparable to the current prime lending rates ? and they?ll also thoroughly explain any administrative or transaction charges on the loan.

Speed of Payment

Even though you need the money right away, some payday lenders impose a time delay on how quickly you can access the money. Before you sign a loan agreement, ask the lender exactly when you?re going to get the money. If there?s a prolonged delay that inconveniences your plans, find another lender. A reputable short-term lender should be able to provide 24/7 service, accessing your loan for you on the same day or evening no matter when you apply.

If you need a short-term payday loan, be sure to do your homework first. It?s crucial to shop for a lender who offers you immediate payment, reasonable terms, penalty-free early repayment and total transparency on the cost of your loan. If these important factors are taken care of to your satisfaction, you?ll be able to take out your payday loan with complete confidence.
